Exploring the Food of Croatia
Croatian food was one of the most unexpected surprises of the trip. It combines Italian and Turkish gastronomy, creating the perfect blend between these two cultures all with great quality sea products.
Some of its most well known recipes are black risotto, made with squid and coloured with ink, a tasty option if you like seafood; as well as octopus salad, a cold refreshing dish, perfect for enjoying it during the hot croatian Summer; their own version of a schnitzel, but stuffed with cheese and ham; or burek, a puff pastry filled with cheese.
Croatian cuisine can be divided into several types, the one from the region of Istria, next to Italy, in wich truffle is a very common ingredient and recipes are more similar to Italian ones; food from the coast, like the octopus salad, in which seafood and fish are more used; and, finaly, gastronomy from the inland country, influenced by Central Europe, with dishes like ćevapi, a sausage served with pita bread and sliced onion.
In a nutshell, Croatia has received lots of influence from different countries, including Italy, Turkey, Hungary or Austria, which make its cuisine perfect for food lovers that want to discover the country’s history through taste.
