There’s a touching old legend behind the bridges of Budapest. As the story goes, a royal figure (either a king or queen) was gravely ill, living on one side of the Danube, in Buda, while their family resided across the river in Pest (or the other way around, depending on who tells it!). When the monarch’s final moments arrived, their loved ones desperately tried to reach them. But the river was frozen, and no bridge connected the two sides.❄️🩷

The ice was too fragile to cross safely, and the family couldn’t make it in time. The ruler passed away alone, and the tragedy left a deep mark on the city’s heart.

According to legend, it was this heartbreaking moment that inspired the eventual push to build bridges across the Danube, so that no one would ever be separated from their loved ones again, even in their final hours. 💔🌉
